When you sit down with Fran, you’ll immediately feel the warm compassion she has become so known for. She easily develops rapport with her clients, empowering them to be open about their concerns. She quickly grasps their life context, with sensitivity to familial, gender and cultural influences. As such, Fran is well able to work with diverse client populations. Her natural ability to work with emotions helps clients explore their inner world and gain a deeper understanding of themselves.
Born in Vancouver’s West End, Fran completed her undergraduate work in music at the University of British Columbia. She did a Master of Education (M.Ed.) at the University of Hartford, Connecticut, where she worked with children attending inner-city schools. Prior to becoming a professional counsellor, Fran taught in regular and alternative schools in North Vancouver.
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom”
Fran is a graduate of the three-year Counsellor Training Program at Clearmind International Institute in Applied Transpersonal Psychology. Studies included: Family Systems Theory, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person Centered (Carl Rogers), Gestalt and Transpersonal orientations. Additional approaches Fran draws from in her work include: Mindfulness Training, the Work of Byron Katie; Imago Therapy by Harville Hendrix, Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compasssion by Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D. and others.
In recent years Fran has become a specialist in the field of Couples and Marriage Counselling. She has completed hundreds of hours of course work, supervision and study as well as extensive individual and group consultation with leading international practitioners of Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT). A highly successful attachment-based approach, EFT was founded by Ottawa Psychologists, Dr. Susan Johnson and Les Greenberg and is now being practiced in the US, England, Europe, Australia and Asia.
Fran works with couples, individuals and families and brings a wealth of experience to her practice, including more than thirty years both teaching and practicing Re-evaluation Counselling, a peer-based system open to people of all ages and backgrounds. One of the primary focuses of Re-Evaluation Counselling is learning to “listen from the heart” – a starting point for all of Fran’s work.
Fran’s love of her chosen profession is immediately obvious. She brings a wealth of experience in the field, not only as a counsellor but also as someone who has directly benefited from years of pursuing her own personal growth.
Fran is a happy grandmother of a baby girl, and in her spare time enjoys the outdoors, playing the violin – a life-long passion – and in the summer enjoys swimming in the ocean as often as she can.
